Many thanks to all of those who attended our Excuse to Juice event last Tuesday night. It was a great session and some interesting healthy concoctions were shared on the night. To see photos of the event visit our Facebook page.

The Sit Right Widget

If you’re sitting at a desk for most of the work you can easily lost track of time and not move from your desk for a few hours, especially when you’re in the middle of big projects. The Sit Right Widget may just be a solution to ensure you are getting up from your desk.

The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia has developed the Sit Right Widget as a simple tool to prompt computer users to take more regular breaks. The default setting is to prompt for a break every hour, although users can change these settings for 20 minute or 40 minute intervals depending on how often you would like (or how often you’ve been advised) to take a break and stretch you legs.

It is free to download, and is available for Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7) and Mac OS X (Lion/10.7.x only).

90% of Herniated Discs Improve with Chiropractic

I treat a lot of clients with herniated discs and this recent reports confirms that Chiropractic treatment can improve this injury.

A new study confirms the vast majority of patients with lumbar disc herniation can find relief with chiropractic care. The findings show that 90% of patients report substantial improvements within three months of receiving their first chiropractic adjustment.

The results are encouraging, since more research is raising questions about the safety and effectiveness of epidural steroid injections for the long-term management of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and sciatica. The study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics, shows that both chronic and acute herniated discs can be effectively treated by chiropractors.

Our Excuse to Juice event is on Tuesday next week. Have you booked your spot yet? Tara and I look forward to seeing you there.

Tara and Dr Sarah are getting fruity for Excuse to Juice on the 25th of March.

The evening is very hands-on with juicing stations set up to encourage guests to taste juice made from the best fruit and vegetable combinations and also come up with their own recipes.

Juice contains most of the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients found in the whole fruit. We will be discussing the secrets to making the best juices and the importance of a healthy body and fully functioning nervous system.

Last year guests created some tasty combinations and we will be looking forward to discovering some new concoctions later this month.”

Some of the benefits of juicing include:

  • The juice contains most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) found in the whole fruit
  • The body absorbs nutrients faster and easier than eating whole foods
  • Boosts your immune system and aids digestion
  • A fun, easy way to incorporate fruit and vegetables into your diet – especially for kids

Tickets to the event are free, but bookings must be made by calling Chiropractic Central on 9418 9031.

Can’t wait to see you then!

Your slim figure could be costing you

CAA NSW Logo jpegThe latest media release from the Chiropractors Association of Australia NSW notes that use of popular shape wear can be detrimental with prolonged use. An excerpt of the full media release is below:

President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW), Dr Joseph Ierano is concerned about the health ramifications of wearing shape wear. “Wearing Spanx and other such garments can encourage muscles to stop doing their job. Muscles should be encouraged to work, not remain ‘lazy,’”

According to Ierano, prolonged use of shapewear may cause muscle weakness – and worse – for those who wear them. “Muscle should be built up through good habits of mobility and exercise rather than an external item of clothing. And when it comes to spinal and joint function, we need free movement and lack of restriction for the body to move normally. Abnormally forcing the body into a conformity may create more problems such as those associated with retracted mobility and masking undiagnosed conditions causing
underlying problems” he says.

The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW) advises the following guidelines:

1. Ensure you are wearing the right size and it’s not inhibiting areas that need to move. No clothing should ever be excessively tight.
2. Try to only wear shape wear on special occasions.
3. Do not exercise or overexert yourself for long periods while wearing shapewear as it can restrict circulation.
4. Do not substitute these slimming garments for a sound weight loss/muscle toning program
